In Swahili, nyekundu means “red,” and the English name for the Roselle flower, also called luoselle, is hibiscus. Kenyan Nyesun gets its name from a particular flavor profile. The words Nye-un (the Swahili word for red) and SH (the Hibiscus/roSelle) combine to form the name Nye-sh-un. The way “Nieshun” is pronounced draws attention to its flavor profile. Roselle stands out for its rich, deep red color and its exquisite, fresh texture resembling honey.
